Former tourism minister and mining baron G Janardhana Reddy’s aide Mehfuz Ali Khan, 29, who surrendered at the city civil court on March 2, has managed to evade arrest for six months while Reddy has been cooling his heels in a Hyderabad jail after his arrest on September 5, 2011.
With Khan’s surrender, the CBI is expected to unearth details of the illegal mining operations carried out by Reddy.
Hailing from Guntakal in Andhra Pradesh, Khan was an engineering student in Bellary and befriended TH Suresh Babu, who later became the BJP MLA from Kampli. Khan wanted to pursue an engineering career, but Babu persuaded him to join Reddy’s enterprise.
Within two years, Khan became Reddy’s blue-eyed boy. Soon, Khan began handling Reddy’s operations in Bellary and even started businesses under benami names without Reddy’s knowledge.
Khan, whose laptop contained details of Reddy’s operations, became one of the CBI’s 150 most-wanted in November 2011.
The CBI also passed a lookout notice for Khan at police stations and airports across the country. After searches in Bellary and Guntakal, the CBI directed Khan’s wife, a government doctor, to persuade him to surrender.
Khan was allegedly hiding in Dubai and there were rumours that he had died, but CBI officials, who tapped the phones of his wife, relatives and friends, confirmed that he was alive.
