As reported in our columns, Congress MP from Vijayawada Lagadapati Rajagopal has predicted that the Congress would not be able to win even a single seat in the by-elections held for seven assembly seats in the state.
Lagadpati came out with his survey report soon after the polling is over and he said in six constituencies, the sitting candidates would retain their seats while in Mahbubnagar, the TRS candidate would emerge victorious. He further said the Congress would come in second position in four constituencies – all in the Telangana region, whereas the TDP would bag the second position in three other seats, including two in Telangana.
He further said the saving grace for the Congress party is that its voting share would increase, whereas that of the TRS would go down. The TDP would make significant improvement in the voting percentage, he said.
Lagadapati attributed the loss of the Congress party in the by-elections to the confusion prevailing among the voters. He said the voters were confused as to whether they should vote for the Congress or not; and if yes, why they should vote for it.
“The party has failed to put up a strong argument before the voters as to why they should vote for it. The party leaders were tentative and hesitant in repulsing the opposition campaign, particularly that of YSR Congress party. The party has failed to turn the sympathy for YSR towards its side,” he pointed out.
He suggested that at least in the forthcoming by-elections to 17 assembly seats, the party should give up its meekness and come out strongly against the opponents.
“It should announce the candidates well in advance and take the party achievements into the people. Otherwise, the same results would be repeated,” he said.
