Lollipops, the box-type advertisement boards located in the central medians (road dividers) in Hyderabad will disappear soon.
Police and traffic experts have advised the state government to ban lollipop advertisements on central medians as they constitute a security threat.
Police say that explosives can be concealed in the box-type lollipops. In fact, the GHMC has removed some of the lollipops on the road in front of the Chief Minister’s camp office at Green Lands, and also near the Secretariat, following a missive from the police.
The state government is giving final touches to the new advertisement policy, which will do away with the system of leasing out the median for advertisements, which was an eyesore anyway, besides obstructing the view of motorists, say traffic experts.
Meanwhile, the lobby of outdoor advertisement agencies is pressurising the government to allow at least “slate type or thin one-inch tin-sheet type” advertisements on the medians, which cannot be used to conceal anything.
Lollipops have higher value than huge hoardings, said a representative of an ad agency. However, GHMC has decided not to renew the lease agreements of many of these advertisements that will expire on March 31.
